I don’t wear a lot of eye makeup often. When I do though, I can’t decide what kind of remover I should go for. I have tried cold cream, but it makes my eyelashes sticky. I tried an oil-based remover, but it stung and left a rash beside my eyes. What do I choose?”

– Kifah Assani, Deira

Response : Sara Capela, Makeup artist:

“To wear glitter liner in a softer avatar, you should carefully assess the product´s glitter size and texture. As glitter particles tend to vary in size, the smaller they are, the more subtle effect you would get. Accordingly, tiny particles are great for daytime and are less flashy, thereby adding some sparkle to the look.

The colour selection also plays an important role, to avoid looking too garish in an office environment. Try more muted and neutral shades with a hint of shine; for example, a beautiful black liner with silver glitter particles or a brown, with specks of gold. Another key element is application – have a light handed approach and avoid very thick lines where a lot of glitter can come on display. Alternatively, you can go ahead lining with a regular eyeliner and add hints of glitter liner on top in strategic spots, to catch the light (inner corner of eyes, center of lid along the lash line, etc.”

“I am a member of the sports team in my college and participate in swimming and soccer competitions. I recently started wearing spectacles because I was diagnosed with myopia. I want to know if this will affect my performance. Also, can I wear contact lenses while participating in these sports, because I can’t wear my spectacles?”

– Mohammed Marzouk, Al Quasis

Response : Dr Vinod Gauba, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Director at Imperial Healthcare:

“Spectacles are often cumbersome and difficult to wear during active physical exercise, such as soccer or swimming. Contact lenses may be a good option for some activities, although they must never be worn when swimming, due to the high risk of potentially sight threatening infections. The performance of contact lenses may also be affected by the entry of sweat or dust in the eyes during certain sport activities. Advanced vision correction options are available for sports players, which can give consistently clear vision, even whilst swimming or on the field.

For instance, Supralasik Vision Correction is a 60 second procedure which is performed without even touching the eye, and can give perfect glasses-free vision. This procedure has been used on many professional athletes and has had a very positive impact on their performance. The first step is to find out more about all the options that are available and to get a thorough and honest professional opinion about what is most suitable for your circumstances. At the end of the day, you must do what is safest and most comfortable for you and your eyes.”

“My 5-year old loves to watch cartoons on the TV. He spends many hours in a day watching the TV and often from a very close distance. I want to know if watching TV from a close distance will affect his eyes. Is there any precaution I should take to safeguard his vision, while letting him enjoy watching TV?”

– Hussam Assli, Mirdif

Response : Dr Vinod Gauba, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Director at Imperial Healthcare:

“In today’s modern society, children are constantly exposed to digital media; be it television, computers or other devices. It is generally advisable to avoid prolonged durations on any of these devices, and to break it up into 30 to 45 minute sessions instead. The fact that your child likes to sit very close to the TV may be sign that he has a problem with the focusing system in his eye, and this should be formally checked by an ophthalmologist.

If a child has a focusing problem and it is not addressed by the age of 7, then they can end up with a permanently weak eye (amblyopia). This is why it is important for all children to have their eyes screened by an eye specialist, particularly since children often don’t voluntarily report any problems. Early detection allows for early treatment, which ensures that every child achieves their full vision potential.”

While watching Christian Dior’s Spring 2013 fashion show on TV, I saw the models wearing very colourful eye makeup. Their eyes were done up in bright colours with diamonds and other sparkly effects on them. It was glorious and I learnt that this is called Rainbow Brite makeup. Since I party often, such makeup would be perfect for an evening out. Can you tell me how I can get this look?”

– Jinal Gandhi, Jumeira Lake Towers

Response : Sara Capela, Makeup artist:

“Congratulations on selecting a bold and vibrant makeup trend for your nights out! Rainbow brite makeup looks are actually very individualistic and artistically inclined, so my best suggestion is that you take out all the bright colours you own and treat your eyes as your canvas.

For a simple, quick, and yet very alluring, eye makeup, you can choose one or two bright colours and apply a light wash all over the eye (blending both together for a seamless transition) and get creative with differently colored eye crystals (Swarovski has some). Your placement options are endless – On the outer corners of the eyes, maybe just along the upper lash line on top of your liner, alongside both upper and lower lash line, inner corners, towards the temples, etc.

If you are going to party all night long, I suggest grabbing your tweezers to hold the crystals and dipping the back part in eyelash glue for better adhesion. If you want something more elaborate, think of dividing your eye in 4-6 parts and apply different/contrasting colours in each area for a true multi-dimensional effect. Finally, adorn with crystals as per your liking!”
