The race to develop smart glasses that will be widely accepted and worn by people around the world isn’t just limited to Google, Apple, and a handful of smaller devoted tech companies. Facebook, the social media juggernaut is developing their own smart-glasses and have won a U.S. Patent for steering the near-eye display to follow the pupil of the wearer.

The patent, issued July 14th, will enable Facebook to devise sleeker less dominant screens for the glasses wearer with a larger field of view than might otherwise be available without this patented system.  The device will adjust the eye box, as well as other features necessary for the device to present essential details to the wearer, based on the location and/or shape of the pupil of the user’s eye.

Lately, Facebook and EssilorLuxottica announced a multiyear collaboration to develop smart-glasses together under the RayBan family. These new glasses are expected sometime in 2021.

Smartglasses have come a long way from Google’s widely heralded, but soon shelved launch of ‘Glass’ back in 2013. These very unstylish frames were widely mocked not for the technology embedded within the Glass system as much as those who wore them everywhere and were able to take high-quality photos and videos anywhere more surreptitiously than ever. It was feared these “glassholes” as they were nicknamed would start taking photos and videos in locker rooms.

Google retreated for a bit but has since dramatically improved their Glass, which is now In use on an enterprise-level that allows workers access to a computer while keeping hands free for work. Companies such as DHL, GE, VW, as well as numerous hospitals have found a use for the device. Google recently purchased North Focals, which will give them a better system for re-entering the consumer market in the near future.

The Apple Event did not showcase new phones or tease the reported new smart glass system reportedly called Apple Glass, which is now expected sometime in 2022. This has everyone else scrambling to enter the market before Apple, whose marketing power and loyal buyers will make their system a huge hit from the day their products become available.
